What Does Corn & the McDonald Brothers Have to Do With E. Coli O157:H7?

Food, Inc. has finally been released on DVD.  I rented it from Netflix and watched it twice.  While "The Future of Food" enlightened me about the genetic engineering and patenting of seed by Monsanto, this documentary also opens the curtain to let us see inside the meat producing industry and it's pretty dirty.  They interviewed farmers for an inside look at the strong arm tactics of the Big 4 industrial food producers. We met the mother of 2 year old Kevin for whom Kevin's Law is named who died within 12 days of eating E.Coli O157:H7 contaminated hamburgers.  I promise you that you will never look at industrialized food in the same way once you watch this film.

But they don't just leave you hanging, they tell you what you can do to keep your family healthy and how to change the industry by voting with your grocery dollars. The good news is that "the winds, they are a changing" and now you can find Organics on the shelves of Wal-Mart in response to consumers' demands.  I may even have to stop boycotting them if this continues.  Well, at least to buy my organic foods. :)

Let's all be "Watchdogs."

I was reading the latest on the investigation of the Somer Thompson kidnapping and murder.  Another tragic event that strikes fear into all of us who love children.

One of the paragraphs was really shocking.  It read "The day after Somer's body was identified, authorities said they had ruled out all 161 registered sex offenders who lived within a 5-mile radius of Somer's home."  Not sure how they ruled them out but my point is we need to know who our neighbors are and Family Watchdog is a good resource for that.  You can subscribe to email notification that lets you know when registered sex offenders move into your area.

Healthy Stuff

Have you ever been out and about and ready to make a purchase but didn't know if the item was safe so you called your mother who knows everything about that kind of stuff and since you asked about that and not about run on sentences, she told you that "you can access the HealthyStuff database by SMS using your mobile phone!

Official Food, Inc. Movie Site - Hungry For Change?

I haven't seen the movie yet because it won't be released until November 3rd but it's at the top of my Netflix list. I'm sure it'll inspire me to be even more "hungry for change."

What's on Your Table?

At the suggestion of my eldest daughter, I ordered "The Future of Food" from Netflix. I had actually seen this before and was just as outraged this time as I was the first. This is an "eye-opening documentary which sheds light on the shadowy relationship between agriculture, big business and government."

I also highly recommend watching the additional featured interviews with Dr. Michael Hansen, a scientist who works for The Consumer Policy Institute, a part of Consumers Union, who not only shed some light on the politics of GMO's but also addressed the lie that we must genetically modify our food to feed the world; and Dr. Arpad Pusztai, a scientist who actually did research on genetically modified potatoes and their effects on rats. His conclusion got him fired.

Allergies are also mentioned in this film which hit close to home for me. My grandson has been tested for allergies because of a severe case of Eczema and none were found. Do they have tests for allergic reactions to GMO's?? Is it possible that his skin is screaming "DANGER, WILL ROBINSON"?

Please take time to watch this, take action in your own life and pass it on to everyone you care about. To keep up with this important topic, go to Seeds of Deception.

Non-GMO Shopping Guide

It's a shame that we have to spend so much time protecting ourselves from the Greedy Mindless Opportunists. Not only do we have to read labels for additives but we also have to make sure we aren't buying genetically engineered food. I guess the cycle of genetically modifying crops, causing disease, treating disease, burying the victims of induced disease, etc. works for a while but it doesn't make economic sense to me. Won't they run out of consumers eventually? But then I'm sure they're in it for the short term. So we need to do our part to protect our families and reduce their consumer base by knowing what not to buy. You can download a Non-GMO Shopping Guide as well as a RGBH Free Dairy Map for your state from Seeds of Deception that will help take a step in that direction.

Steve Brown

I used to listen to Steve Brown about 15 or so years ago. His perspective on Christianity and his outlook on life is refreshing and I still like him even though we've never met. I like his blog too so I added it to my Blogroll in case you might like him too. It's called The Old White Guy Blog. You can also get there from Steve Brown, Etc.

Sailor Scott

Nashville is full of talented people and they all have stories to tell. Sailor Scott is one of them. But since I know Sailor and Dan and their beautiful daughters, I want to "plug" her story. Check out her website at www.sailorscott.com.

The Blue Zones

I just finished reading The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner who has also written articles for National Geographic. It was easy to read in a day, very interesting, and entertaining. This book is about the four regions in the world that have the highest number of centenarians. The research teams sought to find commonality that may have contributed to their longevity. From this research, they developed the Power Nine lessons patterned after the lifestyles of Blue Zones centenarians modified to fit Western lifestyle. (BTW, one of these Blue Zones are in the U.S.)

You can buy this book from Amazon for $10.00, a very worthwhile investment in my opinion. You can also go to http://www.bluezones.com/ to complete the Vitality Compass "to find out where you are on your personal longevity journey" and what you can do "to create a pro-longevity environment -- your own personal Blue Zone -- in your home."

Sad news about a young friend.

I've just been told that a friend of my daughter's has been diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. Kristi is also someone I know and care about. I remember her and her husband Chris as a wonderful young Christian family. She and Chris and their 4 children have had quite a blow dealt to them and all of our prayers are going up to heaven for an intervention from God.

I looked up Hodgkin Lymphoma because I always want to know why this sort of thing would happen to a young, otherwise healthy person. While there are many factors that may be involved, I found it infuriating to see the words pesticide, herbicide, and chlorine mentioned as possible contributors. More reasons to buy or grow your own organic food, filter chlorine out of your water and your life, and discourage insects with natural deterrents.

Please join us in praying for Kristi and her family as they go through this valley.

Get your Vitamin D in 15 minutes a day!

Most of us in the U.S. are Vitamin D deficient from living and working indoors most of the daylight hours. I know I was and Vitamin D deficiency is a major contributor to a host of illnesses including osteoporosis. I actually reversed my osteoporosis by getting an adequate supply of Vitamin D alone (without harmful drugs.) Now with Spring here and Summer fast approaching, we can all get our daily dose with 15 minutes of sunshine a day without sunscreen.

Speaking of sunscreen, did you know that some of them can do more harm than good? Read Nature Mom's Blog to find out which ones to buy. And remember all you need to keep insects at bay safely is just a few drops of Lemon Eucalyptus oil mixed with water in a spray bottle.

Happy Summer!

SPIDERS!

I ran across Nature Moms Blog while doing research on how to discourage spiders to stay outside naturally and found much more. It's been added to my Favorites and I've subscribed to her RSS feed. Check it out and you may do the same.

Healthy Child, Healthy World

This website, Healthy Child, feeds my passion for making a difference in keeping children safe and healthy. My loved ones are patient recipients of books and flowing streams of information. It's infuriating to find out how for the love of money, we are all being slowly poisoned. But we can make a difference by educating ourselves, making the changes we can, and by spreading the word. Read about the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act. Going Green is not about hugging trees so much as it is about hugging kids and each other.
